How to talk Minnesotan

Yes, I'm learning!  My husband actually has a book called "How to Talk Minnesotan" and most of it is true!  After spending time with my friend, Jana, and most of the other people in my little town, I've heard it all!  So here are my two new favorite "Minnesotan" words!

1.  A commercial.  The conversation went something like this with my friend Jana.

Jana, "Do you think I can mash my potatoes tonight for the commercials tomorrow?"
Lindy, "Sure, I have a recipe for that.  What are you making for commercial club?"
(Do you see where this is going...)
Jana, "Commercials" (looking like I was crazy because I hadn't heard her the first time.)
Lindy, "What's a commercial?"
Both of us laughing hysterically.
Jana, "It's a type of sandwich.  Bread, then some kind of meat, roast beef or pork, and then mashed potatoes and gravy on the top."
Lindy, "You mean like a hot roast beef sandwich?"
Jana, "Kind of...."
More laughing.  So I have now figured out what a commercial is.

2.  Bride-elect.  I was confused as to how someone "elects" their bride, but Jana was telling me the bridal shower invitations she is making for a friend.  She said "It will say something like Heidi, bride elect of Grant".  I said "WHAT?"  She "bride-elect".  Again looking like I need my hearing checked.  So I figure out that "Bride elect" is the same as fiance.  Now Jana is wondering if she should change the invitations because it appears not everyone knows what a bride elect is.  I say "no, I'm sure it's fine.".  Then I said, "You put it in the bulletin as "fiance".  Why?"  She said, "I was confused, because I told Denise (the secretary) what to put and it was "bride elect".  I don't know why she changed it.

I called my husband later that evening to tell him my new Minnesotan words and he was laughing.  I guess while he was proofing the bulletin for church he changed the bridal shower announcement from "bride elect" to fiance because he didn't know what a bride elect was either!

In case you are wondering what some of the other crazy words I have learned...

duck duck gray duck (what?  It's duck, duck, goose!)
Taco in a bag (you mean, Frito pie?)
Hot dish (really, this is used in conversation.  I still say casserole.)
A little lunch (a small meal in between breakfast and a real lunch)

I love Minnesota!

  1. Haha, that's hilarious! I've always wondered what a frito pie was! I actually call it a "walkin' taco"...

    Tomato, To-mah-to :D

  2. Oh yes. The commercial, duck duck gray duck... I've heard them before. Not so much bride-elect. Hot dish is big around here, especially amongst the church ladies. I've also heard it called a walking taco, at least that is what the kids call it here, and they LOVE them. I have yet to see what is so exciting about taco fixings dumped in a small bag of chips...

  3. I have heard walking taco, but bide elect is just a Brooten thing after all these years. Jana told the "bride elect" about how I didn't know that phrase and us "darn Nebraskans" were just out of it. Luckily the "bride elect" said "Add us darn North Dakotans to the list, we don't use bride elect". Now I don't feel as crazy!
