Oh Adam

Genesis 3:21 And the Lord God made garments of skins
for the man and for his wife, and clothed them.

We had pretty good bible study this last week.  We are studying A Gardener, Two Travelers, and a Cheat from the People of Faith Series from the ELCA.  Our first lesson was on Adam.  I really did learn a lot.  I think sometimes those of us who have grown up in church think we know the stories.  Don't most of us know about Adam, Eve, the garden, the apple, and the serpent?  We sometimes forget that there is a chance to learn new things even from these stories we have known forever.  Our study on Adam focused on his relationships.  His relationship with God, others, and creation.  Relationships that we still have and, possibly still struggle with.

We play the blame game just like Adam.  Adam probably started it (notice me placing blame on Adam for starting the whole game...)  My bible study mentioned that as soon as God confronted the man, the man threw the woman under the bus.  "She gave me the fruit" and then, if that wasn't enough, he threw God under the bus too.  "The woman you gave me".  Can you just see it now?  We do the same thing.  As kids we blame the brother or sister.  As adults we blame everyone but ourselves.  Sadly, by playing the blame game we actually only hurt ourselves.  If we are playing the blame game we are leaving no room for anyone, including God, to forgive us.  The best part is God forgives us anyway just like Adam and Eve were forgiven.  God still gave them clothes (Genesis 3:21).  God forgives me.  Even when I play the blame game, I'm still clothed in God's grace. We can see those relationships that Adam had and grow as a child of God.  We can put aside the blame knowing that we are wholly forgiven in the waters of baptism and in the death and resurrection of Christ.

  1. Oh yes the blame game! :s We all do it. The selfish nature we have claims we are right. I see this between my kids they fight, argue and blame each other then when they bring it to me and I intervene they turn around and blame me for being unjust. Oh how I wish I could be more like God without getting angry.

    Blessings,

  2. Very timely post! I am amazed at how many times I catch myself blaming others and things for things that I have done or should be stepping up to the plate for. I appreciate you sharing this! By the way, the booties on your Etsy page are adorable!

  3. It's so easy to blame others for our mistakes and misguided steps. It's harder to put my trust in the Lord and own up to those things. I just want to be like Him and walk in grace!

  4. My kids play that game all the time . . . oh wait, there I go blaming them, ha, ha. It's funny how that carries over, and still needs conqured in our adult lives. Praise the Lord for forgiveness!
