A few months ago I made a Green Cleaner as our MOPS craft project! It was very successful and I'm actually ready to make a new batch.
First, I knew I could use borax for just about anything, cleaning the toilet, adding it to laundry etc. We had this recipe in one of our MOPS newsletter for homemade dishwasher detergent. I decided to give it a shot (after my friend Alicia had some success) and ordered some citric acid. I would say the dish detergent works. My glasses are a little cloudy so I double checked the rinse aid compartment, but it is probably just the fact that my glasses are cheap and we have been using them for years. I'm sure they were cloudy before I started this experiment!
A few days ago, I needed more laundry detergent. Since I had almost all of the ingredients for homemade laundry soap, I thought I'd try that too. I have another friend who has had success with the liquid stuff, but I was desperate. I needed to do laundry soon or we'd have no clothes! So I went with the powder formula found here! I used ivory soap and shaving the soap was the longest part of the process. If you have a food processor, I would highly suggest using that! The powder stuff is nice because it makes a small container (you only use 1 or 2 tbsp in each load) and it doesn't take up as much room on my counter. Do some research if you have an HE washing machine. My friend who made the liquid stuff has one and some of the recipes I found said it would work fine. Don't be alarmed, it doesn't suds up very much (which is why it might be fine for an HE machine, but do your own research on that one).
Here is my experiment!
We eat prunes....everyday! These pjs got a mess of prunes on them! I snapped a quick picture. They had been sitting out all day and I did not treat them or soak them!
I ended up with a lot of extra Borax and Washing Soda after our MOPS meeting. I decided to buy it back from MOPS and take it home to see what I could do with it!

I would say the detergent works. I'm sure it would have come out with a little pretreating stain fighter! So there you have it. My science experiment for the week!
Now I still must continue to do the laundry. It's been a long week and I seem to have over booked our family everyday! Today is our at home day and we are going outside in the sunshine!
I'm going to forward your link to the creative people at our MOPS group. I like the idea of making green cleaners. Thanks for sharing.
