It is called a "mission project". I didn't make any money or get anything free. Our church did not get a donation or money towards the building fund or carpet fund, but some women who are working hard got a fair wage for their labor. I feel pretty good about that. A few months ago at a conference I heard about Bead for Life. It is a business opportunity for women in impoverished Africa to earn a living and help their families. Maybe I felt a connection because I liked the looks of the cool jewelry or maybe it is the fact that they are owning their own business and making a living (a dream of mine someday). I guess it could just be that it was an easy way to help other women find hope and help pay for things for their children, like medical care, food, or school fees.
For whatever reason I wanted some of the jewelry and I wanted to help. My circle (church women's group) said I could sell the jewelry during our annual bazaar and see if I could make any money for these hard working people.
Who wouldn't love these beads? They are hand rolled out of magazines and newspaper and then coated and made into jewelry. They match any outfit and I just love them. It feels good to wear something that is helping someone else.
