This little blog post will probably be very hypocritical, but I'm going there...
I find it amazing what technology has done to our opinions. They have turned them into one sided arguments with no room for conversation. We text, tweet, email, and post things on facebook so we don't actually have to talk about anything. You know, like I'm doing now!
We post our opinions on facebook without checking facts first. We link to articles that probably hold only marginal truths and then can't stand it when people comment in a way that doesn't agree with our posting. We delete friends, comments, and argue back. If we were standing across from that person in our office or church, the majority of us probably wouldn't speak to them that way.
We've gained a confidence that really isn't necessary. A state representative told a friend of mine that he received hardly any nasty phone calls when the government shut down in Minnesota but received lots of nasty emails. I guess if you can just write out your thoughts and not worry about the response or just delete it it gives you some courage you probably don't need. Wouldn't you rather have a conversation that gets you answers to your questions?
We need conversation in this world. We can not solve, discuss, debate, or truly agree on anything if we can't talk about it. I wonder what this topic will look like when my kids are in school? Will they ever have to take public speaking or will they be taking more writing classes because we don't plan to speak to each other anymore. Will they not know how to have a constructive debate with someone because they've only seen people text and facebook nasty replies to each other?
Who knows. I just saw something on facebook this morning that I really wanted to reply to, but it just wasn't worth it. We don't have to agree on everything, but we've got to give each other a chance to have conversations. If you can't have a conversation with someone who disagrees with you in a kind way it seems to me that maybe all of your facts aren't accurate! Just an observation that is very hypocritical to be blogging about!
