Vocation

Nope, not a vacation, but a vocation.  I read a book a while ago about our calling and vocation in life.  I was prepared to make a wonderful, life changing blog post about it, but that never happened.  For some reason, I was thinking about vocation again today.  My son went with his Daddy to "preach" at the nursing home this afternoon.  Many have said "another generation of pastors".  If that is what my son chooses, then I will support him.  I just wanted to remind myself that just because I (and maybe you) are not "in the ministry" working at a church or being a pastor, doesn't mean we don't have a calling and a vocation from God.

Now, vocation is not necessarily your job.  My husband may be a pastor, but it is a lot more than that.  His vocation is serving God and his family.  So, for him his calling is to be a pastor.  For me, my vocation is to "love on my family" by being a stay at home mom.  I know for some (myself included) this is a hard concept to grasp.  The culture we live in right now says that your job is who you are.  That's not true.  Who you are is a child of God.  What you do everyday should be a living example of Christ to others.

So you work some minimum wage job to make ends meet.  The job is not your vocation, but working to help provide for your family is.  Showing up and knowing that you could be the light of Christ to someone is your ultimate job.

I have thought about making a family mission statement a lot.  I am a business major (and I read about this family's mission statement a few days ago) and I know that a mission statement can go a long way in how you run your business (or your life).  Instead of a mission statement, somedays I need a vocation statement.  A statement that reminds me of God's love for me and that I have a calling and vocation in my life.  I will get back to you on that statement after I pray about it for a while...
